On Monday, April 13, 2026, the Hingham Girls Varsity tennis team played a match against Longmeadow. This game was important because last year in the semifinals, Longmeadow beat the Hingham Girls out of the playoffs. This time around, Hingham came out on top! Each court battled its way through the match, and in the end, Hingham only lost one of its five courts, an impressive sweeping win against Longmeadow.
Steve Berger, the girls’ varsity tennis coach, explains that, “It was an important early-season win against a two-time defending champion who had over a 50-match win streak! We competed well on all five courts, two of which were decided by tiebreakers. Our only loss was Katie Whitlock on court 3 singles, who was neck and neck with one of the best third singles players in the state. Great sportsmanship by both teams. Hope we can play again! We showed that we can and will compete with anyone!”
This close game not only represented an exciting milestone in HHS tennis but also gave the team momentum to proceed with more exceptional wins. The girls received support from parents, as well as the Girls JV Tennis team, which showed up to spectate and support! Bella Hoffman, a freshman on the JV tennis team, states, “The match was so good, everyone’s shots were consistent, and the sportsmanship was on point!”
This demonstration of community encouragement only strengthens the foundation of the season, as the girls continue their regular season matches, eventually reaching the playoffs. The team is exceptionally strong this year, as one of the sophomores on the team, Ellie Rogers, says, “The tennis match was super fun to watch and an exciting win for Hingham! Longmeadow has been undefeated for three years and 50 matches, and Hingham finally broke that winning streak. This makes me very excited for the upcoming tennis season and how well Hingham will do!”
The team this year continues to demonstrate its great strength from past years, while creating upsets against very qualified teams, paving the way for the rest of the season into the playoffs.
Looking forward, the next match after the break is on Monday, April 27, against Hanover High School, but it is an away match. The following home match is scheduled for April 29 vs Duxbury at 4:00, which will be an exciting battle between the two rival towns. The Hingham community is excited to support the girls’ tennis team as they continue with their journey to the playoffs this season and hopefully continue their winning streak!
