Every April, over 750,000 visitors travel to Indio, California. The high grossing numbers can be attributed to Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, one of the most commercialized and successful events annually. The two-weekend festival features musical performances, immersive art installations, and on-site camping opportunities. Even those who are not attending the festival are aware of its significance.
HHS freshman Maeve Connolly stated, “I love watching videos of the Coachella performances. Every year, I’m excited to see the headliners.” Maeve is only one of the many people who is fixated on the festival. In order to properly celebrate Coachella, it is crucial that the event’s history is appreciated.
In its early days, Coachella was not nearly as successful as it is now. In 1999, the concert promoter company Goldenvoice founded the festival in an attempt to bring larger music events to the desert. It struggled financially and had to skip a year in 2000. HHS senior Alec Whitmore said, “Coachella is so popular now. It’s hard to imagine the early stages of the festival.” Despite its initial struggles, the event gradually grew more popular, and in 2012, the two-weekend format was introduced.
This year, Coachella’s two weekend events span April 10–12 and April 17–19. In 2026 alone, the festival is expected to generate $20 million through tourism spending. The reason for this high number is chiefly due to the musical performances. This year’s headliners are Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G.
Justin Bieber’s Weekend 1 performance has already shattered several Coachella records. His performance is the most viewed in festival history, with over 149 million views. He also broke the record for the highest paid artist, reportedly being paid over $10 million. Fans are especially enthralled about Bieber’s set because it is his first major performance since the remainder of his Justice World Tour was cancelled in 2022.
HHS band teacher Brian Cincotta noted that “It was powerful when Bieber looked on at a younger version of himself when he performed. This return to the stage was more for him than anyone else, especially for him having gone through so much growing up in the music industry.” The frenzy will only grow during the second weekend, and many fans have already nicknamed this year’s festival “Bieberchella”.
The commercial success of Coachella has led many to wonder where the economic profit is disrupted. Coachella is a for-profit event, but it does incorporate charitable aspects. The festival partners with organizations such as Global Inheritance to promote eco-friendly habits. It also works with local charities such as the Galilee Center to donate leftover items to those in need.
Coachella’s popularity has drawn an influx of celebrities and influencers. Many do not see an issue with this, while others criticize their attendance, suggesting that such attendees are only there to capitalize on the success of the festival. The festival has become an internet sensation, with viewers tuning in to see which brands are sponsoring their favorite influencers’ trips. Some have referred to Coachella as the “influencer Olympics”.
Coachella evolved from a faltering event to a sensational phenomenon. Its massive attendance and record breaking performances highlight its appeal, while its charitable partnerships show an attempt to give back to the community amidst its profitable success. Although there are debates regarding commercialization and influencers, the festival remains one of the largest events in pop culture. Throughout the years, the festival has become a sensationalized celebration of art, music, and togetherness.
