American Pharoah Wins Kentucky Derby

This past Saturday, May 2nd, saw the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The attendance was at a record high with more than 170,000 spectators present.

The horse, American Pharoah, won by one length over Firing Line. He won with a time of 2:03.02, which is relatively slow for the Derby. The victory was the third Kentucky Derby win for jockey Victor Espinoza. Espinoza informed reporters that he was “just a lucky Mexican to win three Kentucky Derbies, and two in a row.”

American Pharoah is trained by Bob Baffert, who has now won four Kentucky Derbies. Baffert also trains the horse, Dortmund. Dortmund was leading much of the race, but finished in third with only three lengths between him and American Pharaoh.

In addition to being trained by Baffert, American Pharoah is owned by Egyptian entrepreneur Ahmed Zayat. Zayat owns Zayat Stables and many elite horses. In fact, he has come close to victory at the Kentucky Derby before with Nehro (2011) and Pioneer of the Nile (2009) both finishing second in their respective races.

Regarding American Pharoah’s name, there is an evident misspelling in the word “Pharaoh”. According to the Courier-Journal of Louisville, a fan submitted the name during a contest and spelled “pharaoh” wrong. That spelling was then used to register the horse and now the name is trademarked.

Despite the unfortunate misspelling, American Pharoah was still able to win the first leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. The next race in the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore in two weeks. Then, Belmont Stakes follows on June 6th in New York. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since 1978. American Pharoah remains the only contender for a Triple Crown win in 2015.
