Presidential Race Enters 2016

The presidential race is now entering the stressful year of election, and the final leaders of each party will soon emerge. Hillary Clinton continues to lead the Democrats in front of Bernie Sanders, while Donald Trump leads Republicans with Ted Cruz lagging behind. The major divisions between candidates include dealing with foreign policy and ISIL, Wall Street, race relations, and balancing the economy.

On Saturday, December 19th, the Democratic Party had its most recent debate which included the only three candidates: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley. Clinton took a direct, strong stance against Trump’s beliefs on Muslims, stating that “I worry greatly that the rhetoric coming from the Republicans, particularly Donald Trump, is sending a message to Muslims here in the United States, and literally around the world, that there is a clash of civilizations.” Sanders discussed his plans to decrease the power of corporate America in order to stabilize income inequality.

At Hingham High School, political beliefs range all over the spectrum, from left to right. However, one subject people tend to agree on is the significance of climate change and its threat to the world, an issue which Green Team emphasizes throughout the year. While no club has a political agenda, many seek to inform curious members. The Global Citizenship Program has been helping to educate students on the Syrian and Iranian refugee crisis, and had a webinar on this topic on Wednesday, January 6th.

Each of the presidential candidates have strong opinions and immediate plans of action, so whoever is elected will most likely create a great amount of change.
