This past Friday, May 20th, the class of 2019 hosted a unique event at Hingham Middle School: A freshman-only dance. This social was the brainchild of the freshman class council, which has been taking great strides in fundraising this past year.

This special event was unlike any other social that I attended in my freshman year at Hingham High School in that it was a glow dance. Attendees were greeted at the door with glow necklaces, bracelets, and even faux glasses! The event was also highlighted by two large black lights where people could take pictures and show off their glow! Many students wore white, others wore neon colors, and a few (myself included), even applied fluorescent face paint for an extra touch.

The fun of the night did not end with the costumes, however. Freshman parents graciously donated snacks and drinks as well as games for students who weren’t inclined to dance. The selection included a beanbag toss, an oversized badminton game, and an enlarged version of Jenga in which freshmen Nick Thompson and Louis Soults re-purposed to an interesting extent by forming a sort of fort with the large wooden blocks.

With all of the other festivities, I cannot leave out the DJ and photo-booth. Photographer Andrew Mariner stood ready as groups of students selected props and costumes from a well-stocked selection. As for the music, groups were kept on their feet from 7:30 till 10 with a perfect blend of line dances as well as fresher house music.

Overall, the response to the glow dance was overwhelmingly positive. Lindsey Vogelmann put it best saying “It was a great way to kick off the last eighth of our freshman year.”  This dance was executed simply and perfectly.  The class of 2019 eagerly awaits what the student council can pull off next year.
