The annual Maddie’s Promise Game was played this past Tuesday, October 10th. The Maddie’s Promise Foundation was founded in 2019 by the McCoy family and inspired by their young daughter Maddie McCoy. Maddie was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma, and despite there being no defined treatment for this cancer, Maddie never stopped fighting.

While undergoing treatment, Maddie could no longer play soccer or do gymnastics. Instead, she created inspirational artwork that she sold to help raise money to support other cancer patients and homeless people in Boston, whom she would see driving to and from treatments. Sadly, Maddie was never able to sell her artwork, so her friends and family took on her promise to spread positivity and hold fundraisers for people in need. Maddie McCoy was indeed an amazing, kind person and is still helping and inspiring people today.

The Tuesday night Maddie’s Promise Game was one to remember-a great matchup between Hingham High School’s Girls Varsity team and Pembroke’s Girls Varsity team! With a final score of five to one, it is fair to say this was a fantastic game and an easy win for the Hingham Girls. With a goal from Claire Murray, number 12 and a Senior Captain for the Girls’ Soccer team, Hannah Lasch, number 18 and a new freshman on the team, Ava Varholak, number 20 and also a Senior Captain for this incredible group of girls, and two goals scored by Taylor Bello, the number 19 freshman at Hingham High School.

Taylor Bello had a few thoughtful things to say about this game. She stated, “It was a great game playing for Maddie and most importantly winning got her. The game was an awesome win and we all played so well as a team together.Everyone put 100% effort into the whole game.” Her friend Hannah Lasch also had some notes to add about this memorable game. Hannah said, “It was a great opportunity for the players to fight for a cause and realize there is more out there than just soccer and allowed the athletes to not take their sport for granted.”

This night was to remember Maddie and how she continues to help others by inspiring fundraisers like this. The game was a thoughtful reminder of not only the joy in sports, but that the ability to play such games should not be taken for granted. Maddie’s Promise made this game more than just a scoreboard or a fun activity, but something people can believe in and be inspired by.
