The early spring months are always an exciting time for Hingham High School student-athletes who play spring sports. The spring season is especially exciting for the HHS Girls and Boys Crew Teams as it means they are wrapping up their winter training and finally get the chance to be back on the water.
Hingham Hingham High School’s rowing program is especially unique considering it is only one of 19 public schools in Massachusetts to have such a program. Founded in 2006, the Hingham High School Rowing Association (HHSRA) has made the HHS crew team the second largest program here at HHS with over 115 athletes from both the boys and girls teams. Additionally, what is unique about this program is that it is a three season sport: fall, winter, and spring. The fall and spring are the racing seasons, with the fall races longer in distance while spring races are shorter sprints. During the winter months, the student-athletes are busy training on ergometers (otherwise known as “ergs”) at the former Hingham Light Plant on Cushing Street, as well as local Hingham businesses Mass MVMT and Cycle Town to stay in shape and train for the spring season. Additionally, there is the annual Ergathon in the winter which is a fundraiser for the team and this year’s goal was to raise $50,000 to fund a new safety launch and a new crew shell. Donations remain open through March 31st and you can donate by visiting https://www.mightycause.com/event/HHSRAErgathon2026.
The crew team rows in the Massachusetts Public Rowing Association (MPSRA) and the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) and competes in regattas all across New England including the famous Head of the Charles. Additionally, each spring, HHS Crew hosts their own regatta, the “Salty Bow Regatta” which this year is Thursday, May 7th in Hingham. The “Salty Bow Regatta” against Duxbury will be an exciting race because of the historic Hingham vs. Duxbury rivalry.
The athletes and coaches this year are excited for the upcoming spring season and have high expectations considering both the boys and girls teams were state champs this past fall 2025. The captains for the girls team are Emily Gu, Lulu Orth, and Izzy Wagner, and the captains for the boys team are Hanley Stroka, Nicholas Mangili, and Gerard Bottini. The Girls Crew Head Coach is Sydney Blasseti, and the Head Coach for Boys Crew is Sarah Dewey.
When asked about her thoughts on the upcoming spring season, HHS sophomore and coxswain for the girls crew team, Grace Mullen, shares, “I’m looking forward to being back with the team!” Both the boys and girls crew teams have been working hard over the past two weeks at the Light Plant training facility on Cushing Street in preparation for getting on the water. Once the weather gets better the team expects to be on the water in the next week or so, rowing out of the Hingham Maritime Center (HMC) in Hingham Harbor. When asked about what she enjoys most about HHS crew, junior Annie Sargent shares, “I love getting to know new people and getting to race with the most positive and uplifting community.”
The effort of the amazing community of student athletes, coaches, parents, and more have made this program extremely successful. All of the athletes’ hard work will pay off in their upcoming races. When asked what motivates her the most, senior captain and coxswain Emily Gu says, “what motivates me is always wanting to do my best for my team so that we can be successful!”
