The Boys Volleyball team is made up of nineteen athletes: three seniors, four juniors, seven sophomores, four freshmen, and an eighth grader, with Derek Ogar and CJ Cohen-Dipierro as the team’s captains and Mr. Nugent as the coach since the program started in 2024.
The team has practice in the gym after school from 3:00 to 5:00 most days, where they practice in various ways, usually starting with stretches and peppering (a passing exercise) then moving into drills that help with serving, hitting, and other aspects of the sport, and oftentimes ending with a scrimmage.
Being a relatively new program, the team has yet to find as much success as some of Hingham High School’s other sports, but so far this season the varsity team has won against Scituate High School and has had two very close games with Barnstable and New Bedford. The JV team has not won a game yet, but with the right spirit and enough effort they are bound to win a set any day now.
CJ Cohen-Dipierro, the junior captain of the team, commented that his favorite part was, “…being able to build a program and get more kids interested in the sport I’ve fallen in love with.”
At their most recent game last Friday against Weymouth, the Hingham volleyball team lost both their JV and varsity games, but they did put up a good fight with the varsity team showing their best passing yet and scoring a good amount of points, given that Weymouth is in a league above them.
Coen Melgoza, a freshman, added, “We are a new program, we aim to grow not the team but in the presence of the community of boys volleyball in Hingham. Our goal is not to win, but to grow and encourage volleyball to be something boys pick up at a younger age so for the future we develop athletes that can compete at an elite high school and club level.”
Unlike some other sports, volleyball has matches often, usually multiple times a week, so there are plenty of opportunities to come see a game before the season ends.
