Manchester City, a world renowned football club and one of the best in the Premier League, has some of the world’s top players and is a constant competitor for the top of its league.
In February 2023, Manchester City was officially charged by the Premier League following a four year investigation into 115 financial charges spanning from 2009 to 2018. Recently, this case has begun to dominate headlines because the independent commission finally reached a verdict in September of 2026. After years of behind the scenes legal battles and investigations the commission officially found the club guilty on 114 of the 115 charges against them. But what really happened?
The investigation is noted as the largest and most complex financial mishap case in sport history. The Premier League reviewed nine seasons of data from 2009-2018 including millions of emails, corporate inner workings, and behind the scenes interactions between players and managers. The investigation officially began in December 2018 but the club managed to bury the accusers in paperwork, elongating the case to 2026. Most of the case was kept under wraps with a strictly private 12 week trial in 2024. HHS Soccer star Callum Owen said he “Recalls hearing about the investigation when the allegations first came out, but is surprised that it is somehow stretched this long.” But now the commission has finally spoken and the allegations have turned into a discussion on extreme punishments that could even mean expulsion from the league.
But what did Man City allegedly do? The core allegations include inflated sponsorship deals, underreporting of player and manager salaries, breaches of FFP (Financial Fair Play) and PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules), and a failure to provide accurate financial documents on top of an obstruction of the league’s lengthy investigation. Basically, the team broke rules that limit spending and cash injections while not disclosing true salaries, as well as failure to cooperate with the investigation.
On top of a tarnished reputation what else might happen to the team? There are no specific punishments already laid out for situations like this in the Premier League, so a variety of options are available. The team realistically might face a large multi-season point deduction which would basically destroy all hopes of winning a title. The team could also realistically face transfer bans for players. On the other hand, if the league decided to punish them with extreme measures, Man City could have their 2009 and 2018 Premier League titles revoked or even face demotion to the English Football League (EFL). These options however are unlikely because of the controversy and legal battles that would arise because of it. For now, we await the league’s decision.
In response to the verdict, Man City has issued an appeal, denying all wrongdoing and claiming innocence. HHS Soccer captain, Sean Christofferson when asked about the situation stated that he has “Mixed feelings on the scandal and hopes they are punished but aren’t demoted to an inferior league.” Many football fans might share a similar opinion, some might wish the worst on the team, but the true extent of their punishment is still yet to be decided.
