Slow Coffee recently opened a new location downtown at 106 North Street, Hingham, MA. This is their second South Shore location following their Weymouth one. Slow Coffee offers coffee, espresso, breakfast, and pastries! A few to highlight are their bagel sandwiches and chocolate cranberry walnut cookies. Their specialty drinks include a variety of lattes, such as flavors like tiramisu, black sesame, peanut butter, strawberry matcha, and much more. Another bonus is that they have non-coffee options such as hot cocoa, loose-leaf tea, and iced tea.
The shop is owned by the couple Anson Gao and Bo Wang, who opened their first Slow Coffee location in Columbian Square in South Weymouth back in 2023, and eventually opened their second location in Hingham this year. The couple chose Hingham because they liked the town and when they heard the space was available, they thought it would be a perfect second location.
Customers are able to order ahead of time online or order in person, increasing the shop’s accessibility. The energy of the coffee shop reflects its name, allowing customers to slow down and enjoy their coffee, refreshments, and treats without feeling rushed. The couple intended the space to be a gathering place to meet with friends and catch up over a yummy coffee—and they provided the space to do so.
After asking several high school students what their thoughts are on the new opening, it is apparent that Slow Coffee is an exciting new addition to the town. Starting off with Ella Norton, a senior at Hingham High, who said, “I think that it’s a nice new addition to Hingham Square and the coffee was wonderfully fine. I love the atmosphere inside and there is a lot of seating to sit down and have a coffee with friends.” Ella’s review of the shop fulfills the owners’ intentions of creating a social space.
On the note of ambiance, Pippa Syp, a senior at Notre Dame Academy, said, “I got Slow Coffee a few days after it opened. The environment was welcoming, modern, and bright. My friend and I purchased the Peanut Butter Latte as well as the Tiramisu Latte! Both coffees were great! The peanut butter one was more bland and not as sweet as the tiramisu one. Service was slow, and a little pricey compared to other downtown coffee shops like Red Eye Roasters.” Kylie McAloon, a senior at Hingham High School, had a similar experience with the pace: “I tried slow coffee about a week after it opened and got a pretty basic coffee: an iced vanilla latte. It was definitely slow like the name says. It was pretty good but not the best I have had. I would go again but it wouldn’t be my first choice.” Overall, Slow Coffee has been the new hot spot to try out and the reviews describe the space as perfect for gathering and slowing down, but may not be the best option if you are in a rush.
