Memorial Day is one of the most anticipated holidays that comes right before the beginning of summer, while simultaneously celebrating those who have served in the military, protecting Americans’ freedom. Every year in the United States, many celebrate the long weekend by enjoying the outdoors, eating good food, and making unforgettable memories. Parades also create a fun atmosphere for people to laugh and display appreciation for the veterans.
A very fun and popular Memorial Day celebration is having a cookout. Families and friends gather around grills and campfires to enjoy tasty burgers, hot dogs, and delicious desserts like s’mores. Usually, these celebrations are hosted in warm places, such as the Cape, or in other states. Senior Tommy Hartnett says, “School is out for seniors, so it makes the long weekend even more enjoyable before graduation. I am so excited to have fun with my friends.” This long weekend promotes family bonding and enjoying the freedoms that veterans have given the American people.
Parks and beaches are also very crowded with people swimming, splashing, playing sports, or soaking up the pre-summer sun. Games like Hacky Sack have regained popularity, making it an enjoyable game to play with friends, showcasing skills that make the holiday enjoyable for all ages, especially high schoolers. Friends form a circle and work together to keep a small bean bag in the air without it ever hitting the ground. The game is very simple, yet very competitive. Hacky Sack is a great outdoor activity that adds energy and excitement to the celebration.
In addition to more community activities, carnivals are quick to show up to spread joy with the unique types of foods, games, and rides that cause people to lose their voices from screaming. Sophomore Sasha Darmon states, “I love going to the carnivals during Memorial Day weekend because I enjoy the rides and taking photos with my friends.” Many people enjoy playing carnival games to win prizes or hang out on the Ferris wheels. With bright decorations and loud music, carnivals create an even more exciting environment that helps the teens come together and enjoy their time together.
Memorial Day is filled with entertainment, and it is also a time to remember and honor those who have sacrificed their lives to protect American freedom. By showing up and supporting parades, ceremonies, and cemeteries, people can display their appreciation for our veterans. Remembering both aspects of paying tribute and having fun, Memorial Day is both fun and extremely important for all.
