With warmer temperatures and school ending soon, Hingham residents are looking to get out on the water as soon as possible. When I asked Hingham locals what they were most excited about in the upcoming summer, the typical answer they gave was “I’m looking forward to going on my boat with my friends and family”. A student at Hingham High, Celia Tower, said “A lot of my friends have boats and their boating licenses, so I’m really excited for summer to come around so we can boat together.”
Boating season in Massachusetts typically starts mid-May (Mass.gov), so it makes sense why many people are already starting to get out on the water. Personally, I have seen a lot of people already starting to do boating activities. Some popular boating activities that many Hingham residents particularly love are waterskiing, tubing, and fishing. Bo Wilson, a fellow boater, said, “Tubing is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. I love going super fast and flipping off.” Tubing seems to be one of the more beloved activities for teenagers at the high school.
Although boating may be extremely fun, people need to remember safety protocols when going out on the water to avoid any accidents. People need to remember to bring life jackets on board every time they drive a boat. Also, regular check ups on fuel and batteries of power boats is very important, as no one wants to be stuck in the middle of the ocean without energy to get back to land. When driving at night, navigation lights are very important as well. These lights help boaters see other vessels when driving in the dark, helping them avoid a collision.
Boating is super fun and exciting, but it is always crucial to remember the rules and safety procedures of boating. Many people of Hingham love to boat and use it as a way to hang out with friends and family.
