Leave the World Behind, directed by Sam Esmail came out in October of 2023. “I feel like the movie industry has been lacking in really thrilling movies lately, this movie is just what it needed!” Says sophomore Elizabeth Galvin after watching Leave the World Behind. This thriller has made a recent hit on netflix and social media.
Starring fan favorite Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Mahershala Ali, the movie industry sparked netflix watcher’s attention. This thriller began in a modern mansion occupied by an average family looking to enjoy a relaxing vacation on Long Island. As the movie persists, strange events become more and more frequent. First, an entire trade boat drives straight onto the bathing beach. Then, abnormal animal migration patterns lead to creatures including flamingos and moose ending up on the beaches of New York. And finally, society is cut off from the internet. The public is confused and frantic to uncover the secrets the world holds and what could be in store for the future. Some look at it as a war, some see it as an issue with space technology, and many conclude it’s a government sabotage. As the family welcomes two strangers to their home, deciding who to trust is nearly impossible.
This movie was certainly thrilling and had me on the edge of my seat. Similarly, sophomore Veronica Ruth says, “I loved this movie. I feel like there haven’t been many great horror movies out lately so it was nice to get something different. The end was such a cliff hanger and I hope they come out with a second one.” However, some opinions oppose the positive comments. The movie was meant to provide a thrilling experience for the viewer while also poking fun at the overly modern technology of today. Some viewers who left comments on the Netflix horror film stated that the movie was hard to depict and felt it had little relevance to today’s society. However, many thought it precisely represented today’s society and the dangers of modern technology can interact with the government and lead to corruption. This film was a great watch!
